How to: Style a Coffee Table

Styling a coffee table doesn’t have to be daunting, but it does help to pay attention to a few key tips and tricks. If you’re wondering how to style a coffee table then read on below. Also, these tips work regardless of shape so you don’t have to worry.

Tip 1: Start with a tray

Placing a tray on your coffee table creates a boundary for your decor and helps keep everything organized. You can place your TV remote, a candle, some magazine, and even flowers on the tray. Or, use it for your drinks and coasters! Here are some of our favorite decorative trays. Coffee table tray and green sofa

Tip 2: Add height and dimension

Use a combination of taller objects, like a vase or candlestick, and smaller items like books or decorative objects to create visual interest and balance. Placing a smaller candle on a coffee table book will bring height to a shorter piece. Remember to be creative here!

Tip 3: Mix textures and Materials

Combine different textures, like a woven basket, a sleek vase, and a wooden box, to add depth and contrast to your coffee table decor. Not everything has to match, in fact decor is better when it doesn’t (in our opinion). Greenery and florals count as different materials here, so use your favorite vase and change out your flowers for the seasons.

Tip 4: Consider the Scale

Make sure the size of your decor items is in proportion to the size of your coffee table. Oversized objects can overwhelm a smaller table, while tiny objects can get lost on a larger table. Circling back to Tip 1, using a tray to place a grouping of smaller objects will help fill out empty space on a larger size coffee table.

Tip 5: Leave space for Function

Don’t forget that your coffee table is still a functional piece of furniture. Leave space for drinks or snacks, and make sure your decor doesn’t interfere with the practical use of the table. This ties into the tip above; the scale and proportion of your items is important fact to consider.

We hope these tips helps! Use your coffee table as an opportunity to showcase your personal style and interests. Incorporate objects that reflect your hobbies, travels, or favorite colors to make your coffee table uniquely your own!
