Rug Buying Guide

So, how do you choose the correct rug size for your space? We’re going to share some tips to ensure you get it right the first time, because getting the correct size can really tie the room together. Big Lebowski

Tip 1: Size

The size and layout of the room will determine the proper sizing here. A rug that’s too small or too large will make the room look unbalanced, so getting it right is key. How? The golden rule is to allow the front legs of each furniture piece to rest on the rug. You don’t want the rug “floating” in the center without the legs of your sofa touching it. It should be right underneath your sofa and arm chairs, but not large enough to extend past the back legs.

Tip 2: Material

Rugs come in all types of material and textures. Each with their own durability and maintenance needs. Consider your specific factors when choosing which material to go with. For example, wool is soft and durable, but requires more upkeep than synthetic materials. A synthetic fiber content rug will be less expensive but won’t look or feel as luxurious as a wool content rug.

Tip 3: Style & Pattern

Consider the room’s overall style when selecting a rug. Is it traditional, modern, boho, or rustic, then choose a rug that compliments that style. The color scheme of the room should play a factor here too. Select a rug that picks up the same color tones as the other pieces in the room for a cohesive look.

Tip 4: Traffic

Foot traffic plays a major role in rug selection as well. High traffic areas may call for a more durable and stain resistant material so that it is practical for the space. AlA low traffic area may be grounds for a soft and luxurious material that may require more upkeep, but will only require attention a few times a year.

Tip 5: Purpose

Do you want this rug to be the focal point of the room, add warmth and comfort to the space, or just fill in the gaps to help the room look “complete?” Knowing this will help guide your selection in terms of size, material, and style.

Tip 6: Price

Ah, finally. Rugs vary widely in price and all of the above factors are what determine the price point. Investing in a high-quality rug is worth it for some areas, however would simply not be practical for others. Know that a smaller size rug will generally lower the price, however, do not let this be your deciding factor. Use all of the tips above to decide which price range you should choose for your needs.
